Hello. I’m a qualified Clinical Psychologist and have also experienced three miscarriages. I picture the children who would have been as flying with the bluebirds somewhere over the rainbow like in the lullaby. When I miscarried, I was shocked by the silence around miscarriage given how common it is. As a Clinical Psychologist I’m lucky that I know how to find mental health resources but most women probably don’t when they’re in the raw pain of pregnancy loss. I believe in #be the change you want to see in the world and this site is my contribution towards that aim.
On this site as I build it – still a work in progress I’m afraid – you’ll hopefully find links to practical and factual information about miscarriage which I found surprisingly hard to get hold of when I needed it. I found skills and strategies to help me cope emotionally with miscarriage from acceptance and commitment therapy resources and also from compassion focussed therapy resources so I’ve shared that here too. I also thought I’d share my own experiences to give some context for how these models can help. I’m only one voice so I’ve also tried to link to other sites where further identification, information or support might be available. I’m very open to feedback or other ideas of how I can improve my site content – whether you spot a typo or think I could explain myself better, just let me know in a comment and I’ll see what I can do.
I’m also writing during coronavirus lockdown and aware of how many families will be struggling with emotional well-being and lacking resources and support to turn to. Here I can offer my ideas, experience and resource links for further help. I’m aware someone reading this could feel they or their family members require professional counselling. In the UK, this can be accessed for free by asking your GP for a referral. Alternatively, there are increasing numbers of psychological therapists offering their services in private practice. I work in an NHS role normally although on maternity leave at present and am not able to undertake any private work. However I hope if you are at a point in life you feel that you require therapy that you find what you need – maybe look in the “further help” section for some signposts.
